From a Humble Start (2E5 Shilei's Maternal Aunt)

Interviewer: NG SHI LEI
Date: 15 JULY 2006
Place: MY AUNT”S HOUSE

I have chosen to interview my aunt, SEH POH TIN. Now she is staying

with 2 of her sisters and mother at Blk 608, Jurong West .She was

born on 31st August 1964 in Kandang Kerbau hospital to a big family of nine

siblings: 5 sisters and 4 brothers. Her sisters’ names are POH CHOO, POH SEOH, POH

SIU, POH GEOK and POH CHENG. Her brothers’ names are CHWEE BOCK, BENG

GEE, BENG HOCK and BENG KIAT. She is the youngest in the family. Her

mother’s name is TAN AH SUAN and father’s name was SEAH CHAN. Her father

has passed away and her mother staying with her. Her mother is retired as my aunt is

working to support her. My aunt always quarrels with her mother for example when

she insists my grandmother eat more. But she doesn’t want to eat and is very skinny.

In her childhood days, games such as five stones, zero-point (a skipping game

with threaded rubber bands used as a jump rope), marbles, kuti-kuti, capteh (keeping

feathered toy in the air with series of kicks), gasing (wooden tops)

hop-scotch and sepak takraw (foot version of volleyball played with a rattan ball) were

being played between her siblings and her during their free time. Although the

youngest, she has the greatest responsibility in helping out in the family. She would

help in making noodles, pouring the oil, washing the rice and doing some housework.

She would also help to carry the groceries when her mother went to the

market. She loved to help to kill the chickens that her family had owned.

During those days, people often owned animals [chickens, ducks, etc] so that

they could kill them for meat. She would first grab the

chicken, use a knife to cut the gullet of the chicken and the

chicken's blood would be drained into a container which later the family drank

for health. She was busy every day going to school and helping out

in the family business such that her family did not have time to go for holidays.

Although it may seem boring, she was still happy. One of the punishments that she

would always remember was when she was caned very severely by one of her

older sisters [ my mum] as her results had dropped  and she had been transferred

from class A to B. Being very mischievous when she was young, she had been in

trouble many times. She would play in the rain, climb to the roof of her wooden

house, climb trees, catch earthworms, swim in the pond getting herself dirty

and muddy. She would fight with her sisters, pulling all their clothes out from

the cupboard, sometimes using vulgar language, often throwing tantrums and often

screaming like a mad woman. She would tinker with her father’s

carpentry tools and making her own furniture with those and a few pieces

of wood.

My aunt studied in River Valley English School which is located at

River Valley Road, Mei Chin Secondary school located at Mei Chin Road and later

Singapore Polytechnic at Dover Road. She participated in folk dancing,

and was in the ensemble playing the recorder. She remembered two teachers namely

Miss Ho and Mr Chen. The subjects she took in school were quite similar

to the subjects taken these days which are English, Math, Science, Art,

History, Geography, Chinese, Physical Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology,

Technical Art, Home Economics and Literature. My aunt is a Buddhist and

worships in the temple. She is not married yet. In those days, she lived in a

village in a zinc-roofed wooden house with her family. Now she is living in a HDB

flat.

In her childhood days, she often gathered with her siblings or neighbours

to play. When she and her siblings wanted to watch television, they had to go

to someone’s house to watch television. This shows that not all families had a

television set; only the richer could afford it. My aunt loves travelling,

drawing, reading fashion and art magazine and yoga. She also has gone wind

surfing and scuba diving. She really enjoys the experience of scuba

diving in the middle of the sea. She recounted that it was very quiet in there,

with many types of fishes swimming past her. She has gone to many cities and

countries such as LondonParisGermanyHolland, Vienna, Italy, SpainJapan,

Hong Kong,Thailand, New Zealand, SydneyIndonesiaKorea and Malaysia. She

has experienced a lot after going to these countries. She has experienced their

different culture, food and their language.

National Service started in 1967. My aunt’s brothers

had to serve National Service. She was still young at that time living in the wooden

house. Her family’s business was greatly affected as there was a lack of manpower as

her brothers do most of the work such as delivering goods or

helping in the manufacturing of goods. Life was not very good during this

period as she and her sisters had to do more to help out with the family.

When she was young, a fire broke out at Bukit Ho Swee. The house

she lived in was partially burnt. Many houses were burnt down. She recounted

that an old man living around that area had all his hard-earned money to make a trip to

China was destroyed with the house. He was so heartbroken that he

cried everyday. Some international countries knew about this great disaster

and donated money to the victims. The amount of money given to each

household was based on the number of family members in it. Some people in a

huge family even get rich because of this disaster and started a business

with the relief funds.

During one of the racial riots, the Malays wanted to beat up

the Chinese because of some disagreements between them. Some good-

hearted Malays hid the Chinese to prevent them from being beaten up or

even killed. One of my uncle joined a gang when he was very young. He was in a

gang fight and died after he was stabbed.

Under Lee Kuan Yew’s government, there were a lot of improvements

in Singapore. Children got to study in English schools. People could lived in HDB

flats which are cleaner than wooden houses. There are hardly

anymore beggars in the streets and the poor are taken care of. Lee Kuan

Yew made it a point that no homeless people are allowed in the streets, took care of

the elderly and made the travelling more affordable so that more people can

travel. There are no more riots. Under Goh Chok Tong’s and Lee Hsien Long’s

government, more improvements have been made and more difficulties have been

addressed.

Don’t take Singapore and the ministers for granted. Thank our

forefathers for founding, taking care of Singapore and building up

Singapore. If not for them, Singapore wouldn’t be here today.

  2. CHAN PING XUAN (2E5 - 2016) I agree with this story as it talks about the kampong spirit. In the olden days, killing chicken alive, with their hands, is a norm. However, in the modern day, we would feel disgusted and we would not dare to continue to watch the chicken die. I strongly feel this should be shared with every Singaporean as this will remind of us how villagers feed themselves without having advanced technology that we have nowadays and how to live independently for ourselves when all that we rely on fails to help us .

  3. SARA LYNN KHOO SHIN WOON (2E5 -2016) I chose this story as the writer not only wrote about what her aunt experienced, but also the events that happened during that time and how it affected her aunt and her family. She had examples of the kind of games they used to play in the past which gives me an insight of how life was like when Singapore was considered a third-world country and when most people stayed in Kampongs. It shows the transition how Singapore from a young, small nation became the financial hub it is today. I realise how lucky I am to have what I have and what our forefathers had to go through to build Singapore into the successful and stable country that I am fortunate enough to live in today. I have a better understanding and view on the way of life during that period of time. Hence, I feel that this story should be featured in a SG51 blog.

  4. CHAN KIN WENG GAVIN (2E5 - 2016) I am choosing this story as it shows us about our grandparents' and parents' lives when they were children. An example is when they play traditional games like five stones, zero-point, marbles, kuti-kuti, capteh, gasing, hop-scotch and sepak takraw. These are the games our parents used to play as children. However there were not only the good days, there were also the bad days like when the Malays wanted to beat up the Chinese because of some disagreements but some good-hearted malays hid the Chinese to prevent them for being killed and another incident is the Bukit Ho Swee fire and the house she lived in was partially burnt but some people in other countries knew about the great disaster and gave money to the victims. So this is why I chose this story to be in a SG51 blog.

  5. KANG CHUN HE GABRIEL (2E5 -2016) This story has many key events that happened In Singapore's history, such as the racial riots, the introduction of NS and many more. All these have contributed to the success of Singapore that we have today; the peace, prosperity and the sense of security that we have when we are in Singapore. this story showed how we changed from a third-world to a first-world country. This story has really made me think and reflect that the Singapore we have today didn't come by chance. It was only possible through the hard work of our forefathers and our ministers. We have to cherish Singapore, not take it for granted, protect it as well as make it prosper even more. Thus I feel that this story should be in a SG51 blog.

  6. LENG JIA YING, JOY (2E5 - 2016) I chose this story as it shows how her aunts and uncles lived in the past. Also it shows about their life in the past and what games they usually played. As compared to the modern city now, we do not even play games with each other such as 5 stones as mentioned, instead we focus more on our electronic devices. Also, it shows that if without the modern technology we have now, we can also still stay happy with each other's company. In addition, it also shows how we should be thankful to our forefathers for creating such a beautiful country for us to stay in. This story also shows how there was racial disagreements between the Chinese and Malay in the past. But like I said, thanks to our forefathers, we now do not have anymore riots as compared to the past. Therefore, I choose this story for a SG51 blog.

  7. EMILIA LIM (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about the life in Singapore before the dramatic improvement of the country. I think Singaporeans nowadays are more of an introvert than the old days as ever since electronics has been invented, they hardly go out and play with our friends. People in the old days, especially children, usually go out to explore or play. It is quite sad to see that there are very few kids spending their playtime outdoors. I believe this story teaches us to cherish what is given to us now and respect one another. Having respect for each other is very important as it can either help us or harm. Especially in race relations, we have to respect the culture of others and what they are. I can identify with/relate to what happened with the Little India incident which happened in December 3, 2013. It has been very long since the last riot in Singapore in 1964, and that was 44 years ago. I really think this story should be posted in the SG51 blog.

  8. DONNY DEFIT (2E5- 2016) I think that this story should be included in the SG51 blog as it talks about how people in Singapore lived in the past and how it changed through the years under Lee Kuan Yew's government. In the past, some people had to visit their friend's or relative's house to watch a television as there were many families who could not afford a television and only the rich could afford it. In the past , there were also many homeless people as they were too poor to afford a house. In addition, riots was also a big problem. Under Lee Kuan Yew's government, many things have changed. Children get to study in English schools, poor people are being taken care of by the government and riots have stopped. We should all be thankful as today, everyone of us goes to an English-medium school, has a television to watch and we live in peace without any riots. Therefore, I think that this story should be in a SG51 blog.

  9. MOHAMAD IQMAL B MOHAMAD FAIRUZ (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about how people in Singapore lived in the olden days. It also teaches us to be grateful for what we have and not taking for granted, especially what our forefathers have done. I can relate to what the government in the past has done. They made sure that everyone lived in peace with proper houses to live in. They made people of different races live in peace and harmony. This is why I want this story to be included in a SG51 blog because I want everyone to be grateful for what we have and not complain all the time.

  10. WONG CHIEN MUN (2E5 - 2016) I think this story should be chosen for a SG51 blog as it tells a lot about Singapore's history. For example, it tells about her aunt playing traditional games such as, sepak takraw, capteh and five stones. All these shows the traditional games people played in the past to spend time. The story also says families kept animals for food. Parents were also very strict when it comes to academics and this story says that. It features Singapore's famous incidents like the Bukit Ho Swee fire and the racial riots. The fire affected many people including her aunt. It also gives some background of the riot. It tells how the government has changed SG and everyone has a better life than before. So, that is why I think this story should be chosen to be in a SG51 blog.

  11. SO ZHI XUAN (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about how people in Singapore live in the past. It shows how people were happy even when they played simple games like capteh and five stones. Also, it shows how many people lost their homes due to the Bukit Ho Swee fire. Under Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s government, Singapore has made many improvements. Children got to go to school for education and people moved to new HDB flats, which has a better environment than wooden houses. I feel that Singaporeans nowadays take many things for granted, especially what our forefathers have done for us. I believe this story teaches us to be grateful and thankful to our forefathers for building this beautiful and comfortable country for everyone to live in. So, that is why I feel that this story should be in a SG51 blog.

  12. i agree that this story should be included in the SG51 blog as it shows the lifestyle of people in the past. Games such as 5 stones which were very popular in the past, were played by many. However, due to the advancement of technology, this game is rarely seen nowdays as people would go on the internet to search for more trending games. i feel that we should be thankful for what we have now and treasure them as live in the past was very tough and people were very poor as compared to now, we are living a much better life. We have almost everything we want, unlike people in the past, who had to scrimp and save if they wanted to buy something as they could not afford it. We should be thankful to our forefathers as we are living in a racial harmony country now with everyone treated equally. Our founding father made sure everyone had a place to live in. All in all, i feel that Singaporeans should preserve history.
