My father Ong Chin Yek was born on December
30th 1953. His father’s name is Ong Kim Choon. His mother’s name is
Neo Hwee Tee. He has eight siblings. He used to live in Old Jurong Road in a
kampong at track eight. His family ran a provision shop selling foodstuff and
toiletries. Every day after school, he had to go to the provision shop straight
after school to help out in the shop until eight in the evening. After that, my
father had to study. As there was no light, my father had to rely on kerosene
light to study. There was also no time to play as they had to tend to the
family business.
My father attended a primary school called
Yu Hua Primary school. He also attended St Theresa’s Secondary before going
Ngee Ann Polytechnic. There were also no such things as extra activities in
those days. My father is a strong believer in Buddhism, which was enforced by
my grandfather. My father still goes to temples to pray whenever he is free. My
father also rarely went out with his friends because of his responsibilities.
My father lost his father at the age of twenty when my grandfather’s vehicle
had a head-on collision with a truck which was coming from the opposite
direction. He was killed almost immediately. The whole family mourned the loss.
My father got married at the age of forty to
my mother who was thirty-four. They had a simple ceremony, but they did not
receive any blessings from my mother’s church. I think it was because
Christians are not allowed to marry out of their religion.
My father also
lived through the racial riots. He told me that many people lost their lives
during those times and there were curfews put in place. He could not remember
much about the Indonesian Confrontation. My father could not remember anything
about being under David Marshall and Lim Yew Hock as he was very young during
that time.
During the times under Lee Kuan Yew, my father
told me that it was a very difficult time for Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew faced
many problems like lack of proper housing, no proper roads and transport. The
living conditions of Singaporeans at that time were very poor. Prime Minister
Lee Kuan Yew brought in the assistance of Lim Kim San who built public housing
for the citizens and with the old guard, made up of S. Rajaratnam, Goh Keng
Swee and Toh Chin Chye set up a proper government to take care and improve the
standard of living of Singaporeans.
Singapore, on the recommendation of the
Malaysian Prime Minister Tengku Abdul Raham, joined the Malaysia government to
form the Federation of Malaysia. As Singapore grew stronger day by day as the
old guard of the People’s Action Party were committed to giving Singaporeans a
better life. Malaysian Government at that time, began to feel the threat from
the Singaporean government and feared that the Singaporean government would
take over the Malaysian government, Singapore broke away from Malaysia, and
became independent. But relationship of both countries can be defined as a
“love - hate” relationship, because both countries are so interdependent on one
another.
Thus after independence, PM Lee Kuan Yew and
the old guard, began the long road of hard work to raise the standard of living
of Singaporeans to the next level. Under careful planning and good policies,
Singapore began to grow speedily. Life has always been peaceful without any
further racial riot curfews, because we are bound together under the pledge
that has been ingrained as we recite it from the day that we start
school.
Under the stalwart leadership of PM Lee
Kuan Yew and under Goh Chok Tong’s leadership, we continued to have peace and
prosperity, although there were a few small problems. We were hit with recessions.
We were able to pull through the difficult time, because Singaporeans were
co-operative. With Goh Chok Tong’s easy demeanor, and practical character, we
were able to pull through another era of stability under his leadership.
With Lee Hsien
Loong at the helm now, and the country has been reaching a plateau in all the
policies, he is faced with another set of problems. The younger Singaporeans
that have never gone through hardships like our parents are taking all
political issues for granted. He is going through second term now, and under
his leadership, I am sure that we will be able to have another ten years of
quiet stable political environment.
Ong Shi Hao - Sec 2E/4
NG SIANG LIN (2E4 -2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about how Singapore has faced many hardships before becoming a First World country, how difficult it was to build up the present Singapore and how much commitment and hardwork the government had to build flats to raise the standard of living of Singaporeans, and in promoting racial harmony. I think that Singaporeans are taking what the older generations have shed their blood and sweat in building Singapore for granted as they have never experienced hardships. I believe this story teaches us to appreciate the lifestyle we have now and not take it for granted as we never know when our peaceful lives may end. We must also continue the legacy that the older generations have given us and continue to build up Singapore to a better and more prosperous country than it already is.
ReplyDeleteS SAMUEL PAUNG THA (2E4 - 2016) I agree that this story should be included in a SG51 blog as it shows how much hardship the government had to go through to raise Singapore to new heights pushing it from a third world country to first world. It also shows how the living conditions for the citizens were and how much Shi Hao's father had gone through rarely having time for himself and spending it on helping his family. It also finally shows the racial segregation between religions, when his father married a Christian woman and were offered no blessing. It proves Singapore has gone through a lot to become the nation it is today.
ReplyDeleteMUHAMMAD KHAIRY B KAMALI (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about how previous Political Leaders of Singapore have changed and shaped the country to what it is now. This story also talks about how Shi Hao's father had witnessed these changes throughout his life. I think Singaporeans nowadays take things for granted, a very common saying. Additionally, I believe this story teaches us to be more appreciative of what previous Political Leaders have done and to be more understanding of politics. It also teaches us to maintain racial harmony to prevent racial riots or discrimination. I can relate to this story as I am living in the world of modern technology and politics, where it is important to be knowledgable of the past to better improve the future.
ReplyDeleteLIM LI AN TREVAN (2E5 -2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao's should be included in a SG51 blog as it shows how Singaporeans' lifestyle has changed from the past to the present. One example would be Singaporeans nowadays having the comfort of electric lights at night now, while in the past, people had to rely on kerosene light to work at night.
ReplyDeleteIt also shows the success of Singapore and the hard work of our Singapore leaders by solving problems carefully, and the planning of good policies. All this makes Singapore grow from a third world country to a first world country. Therefore, I agree that this story by Shi Hao should be included in a SG51 blog.
GERALD LIM DA XIANG (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about how tough life was in the past and how it became better under the support of our prime minister and government. I think Singaporeans nowadays do not appreciate what they have as they do not know how our pioneers suffered in the earlier periods of Singapore. I believe this story teaches us to be more thankful towards our ministers and government for shaping Singapore to a better place to live in. I can relate to what happened in this story as I am have met problems in my life, whether it is in my academics or social standing, and how hard it is to overcome them.
ReplyDeleteTESSA CHAN SHUANG MIN (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao's father should be included in a SG51 blog as it shows how tough life was back then and the different stages Singapore went through to become as successful as it is today. It also shows how political leaders worked very hard to make Singapore from a mudflat to a thriving metropolis and solving many problems such as racial riots, lack of proper housing, no proper roads and transport.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, this story teaches us the importance of maintaining peace and racial harmony to prevent racial discrimination and riots and how to be appreciative of what our political leaders have done for us in the past. Therefore, I agree that this story by Shi Hao's father should be included in the SG51 blog.
NUR FARIHAH BTE AHMAD FARUZI (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao's father should be included in a SG51 blog as it shows how Singapore has developed into a strong and successful country from a weak country. The leaders from the past have done their best and as a result of that, Singapore has became a beautiful country. I think Singaporeans nowadays do not appreciate the things they have now . Singaporeans nowadays are different from the past in terms of their behaviour. I think they have not learnt the useful values from the past. I believe this story teaches us to always look into the future and work hard for a better future. I can relate to what happened in this story as I, myself have experienced. Sometimes, things don't go the way I want. To achieve my goals, I need to work hard and focus on my academics.
ReplyDeleteCELEST TAN XUAN (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about how people are so poor that they had to use kerosene light to study at night, how people frowned upon a man’s wife being older. It also talks about how people face racial riots causing many to lose their lives. It also talks about how Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and his cabinet members have actually built Singapore from an undeveloped nation into a developed and successful nation. I think Singaporeans nowadays are happier as there is electricity around us can we are able to get light easily even at night. Singaporeans nowadays are rarely affected by the practice that man’s wife should be younger than the man and Singapore rarely faces racial riots as today we are united as one. I believe this story teaches us to not take away innocent life, appreciate and enjoy what we currently have, always look at other's viewpoints and to be determined in all we do. I can identify with/relate to what happened in Singapore.
ReplyDeleteTAN WEI HAN, MATHIAS (2E5 - 2016) I vote for this story by Shi Hao to be included in a SG51 blog because it shows how life was tough in the past in Singapore and that there were challenges such as a shortage of housing, riots and lack of transport. This story also states how our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and his team made Singapore a better place. Mr Lee raised the standard of living in Singapore and Singapore started to grow speedily through proper planning and policies. In conclusion, this story by Shi Hao should be included in a SG51 blog as it describes the hardship gone through by Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his team to make Singapore a better place and that the younger generations of Singapore should acknowledge what Mr Lee Kuan Yew has done for Singapore and not to take what he has done for granted.
ReplyDeleteJOVAN LEONG (2E5 - 2016) I agree that this story by Shi Hao should be included in a SG51 blog because it talks about racial riots in the past and it clearly shows how our government took the initiative to try and stop the riots by setting curfews. Over the years, the old guard of PAP have commited themselves to give Singaporeans a better life. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew also built public housing for the citizens with assistance from Lim Kim San and the old guard. After Singapore gained independence, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his team began transforming Singapore into a better country under careful planning and good policies. Under their leadership, we continued to have peace and even prospered to a first world country. Lastly, this generation of youngsters have never gone through hardships like our parents did and are taking all political issues for granted. In conclusion, we owe our success to Mr Lee Kuan Yew's team and partners as they built housing, roads, industrial buildings and many more.
ReplyDeleteEthel Lee (2E5 - 2016) I chose Ong Shi Hao's story as it tells us how our political leaders and government faced the challenges given to Singapore with courage and perseverance. When Singapore broke away from Malaysia, Mr Lee Kuan Yew took up the responsibility as the Prime Minister to improve and build Singapore to what it is now, the beautiful garden city. He brought people together and led them to solve problems together as a country. Thus, Singapore has come so far, from a small, unknown country, to a great, successful city. This being said, the current and future generations of Singapore should appreciate what our forefathers have provided for us. They have sacrificed their whole lives fighting for their rights, and also ours, building up a strong, safe, and free nation. We should continue their legacy and keep Singapore as great as she is. If not, we could make it a greater place to be in, so that we can always hold our heads high and say that we are proud of Singapore.
ReplyDeleteLOW LI FA (2E5 - 2016) I chose Shi Hao's story as we can see the sacrifices Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our former prime minster, made for Singapore. He set up a proper government in Singapore to improve the living of Singaporeans together with the old guard, and also Lim Kim San, who built public housing for the citizens. If not, the citizens would still be living in slums. Along his way to build Singapore up to become a great city, Mr Lee has overcome countless difficulties and solved many problems, and the actions of this one great man have brought unity and harmony amongst us. He took the initiative to improve our country and marked Singapore's first step to becoming what it is now. Without him, Singapore would not even be close to what it is now. While Mr Lee worried and feared for the future of Singapore, he neglected himself. Compared to him, Singaporeans nowadays take things for granted and are usually unwilling to make sacrifices. Courage to sacrifice his whole life for Singapore is not common.
